Professor T J Ryan is working for the Department of Dermatology
at the Churchill Hospital, Oxford and Jiao Tong University Xi'an,
to promote an international collaboration for the retraining of
village health care workers in the fields of skin care, sexually
transmitted infections and leprosy. A partnership with the National
Institute of Dermatology in Nanjing is the case of need, the feasibility
and the cost of providing skin care, especially to Western China
with its population of 450 million. 50 ethnic groups and languages
under the heading of skin care is included in the management of
wounds and burns.

As Chairman of the International Foundation for Dermatology, it
was a requirement to take dermatology, sexually transmitted diseases
and leprosy into general health services of the developing world.
The regional Dermatology Training Centre, Moshi, Tanzania, a Collaborating
Centre with WHO, is a principal focus for these activities. During
the past four years, frequent visits to India, Vietnam and China
have promoted a broad view of dermatology to include wound healing,
skin hygiene and the management of lymphoedema. Advice to the Global
Alliance concerned with the elimination of lymphatic filariasis
is a principal interest at the present time and includes integration
of Indian systems of medicine with western medicine.
As a Director of the Global Initiative for Traditional Systems
(GIFTS) of health, the promotion of integration of traditional health
with Western
medicine. Professor T J Ryan is now working to promote an international
collaboration for the retraining of village health care workers
in the fields of skin care, sexually transmitted infections and
leprosy.
Publications
Author of more than 500 publications in the fields of dermatology,
wound healing, microcirculation, the lymphatic system, leprosy,
traditional medicine, etc.
